Imports Up, Exports Mixed For The First Eight Months Of 2021, Compared To The First Eight Months Of 2020


U.S. government trade figures for August 2021 indicated raw material imports were up in two categories outlined: broom and mop handles and brush backs, compared to August 2020. For the first eight months of 2021, raw material imports were up in three categories outlined: broom and mop handles, brush backs and metal handles, compared to the first eight months of 2020.

Import totals for August 2021 were up in four of the finished goods categories outlined: brooms and brushes of vegetable material, toothbrushes, hairbrushes and shaving brushes, compared to August 2020. During the first eight months of 2021, import totals were up in five categories outlined: brooms and brushes of vegetable material, hairbrushes, paint rollers, paintbrushes and upright brooms, compared to the first eight months of 2020.


– RAW MATERIAL IMPORTS –


Hog Bristle

The United States imported 1,724 kilograms of hog bristle in August 2021, down 69 percent from 5,555 kilograms imported in August 2020. During the first eight months of 2021, 84,112 kilograms of hog bristle were imported, down 19 percent from 103,558 kilograms for the first eight months of 2020.

China sent 84,107 kilograms of hog bristle to the United States during the first eight months of 2021.

The average price per kilogram for August 2021 was $59.38, up 57 percent from $37.85 per kilogram for August 2020. During the first eight months of 2021, the average price per kilogram was $50.35, up 78 percent from $28.23 for the first eight months of 2020.

Broom And Mop Handles

The import total of broom and mop handles during August 2021 was 1.8 million, up 104 percent from 882,124 for August 2020. During the first eight months of 2021, 9.7 million broom and mop handles were imported, up 26 percent from 7.7 million for the first eight months of 2020.

During the first eight months of 2021, the United States received 5.7 million broom and mop handles from Honduras, 1.9 million from Brazil and 1.6 million from China.

The average price per handle for August 2021 was 53 cents, down 45 percent from 96 cents for August 2020. During the first eight months of 2021, the average price per handle was 65 cents, down 17 percent from 78 cents for the first eight months of 2020.


Brush Backs

August 2021 imports of brush backs totaled 479,571, up 75 percent from 273,486 for August 2020. During the first eight months of 2021, 3.1 million brush backs were imported, up 82 percent from 1.7 million for the first eight months of 2020.

Canada exported 1.2 million brush backs during the first eight months of 2021.

The average price per brush back was 45 cents during August 2021, the same as the average price for August 2020. During the first eight months of 2021, the average price was 47 cents, down 6 percent from 50 cents for the first eight months of 2020.

Metal Handles

The import total of metal handles during August 2021 was 2.1 million, down 16 percent from 2.5 million for August 2020. During the first eight months of 2021, 15.7 million metal handles were imported, up 17 percent from 13.4 million for the first eight months of 2020.

During the first eight months of 2021, China sent 8.3 million metal handles to the United States, while Italy exported 4.5 million and Spain sent 2.7 million.

The average price per handle for August 2021 was $1.12, up 49 percent from 75 cents for August 2020. During the first eight months of 2021, the average price per handle was 96 cents, up 8 percent from 89 cents for the first eight months of 2020.

– FINISHED GOODS IMPORTS –


Brooms Of Broom Corn Valued At More Than 96 Cents

The United States imported 500,883 brooms of broom corn valued at more than 96 cents per broom during August 2021, down 1 percent from 504,823 for August 2020. During the first eight months of 2021, 3.3 million brooms were imported, down 13 percent from 3.8 million for the first eight months of 2020.

Mexico sent nearly all the brooms to the United States during the first eight months of 2021.

The average price per broom for August 2021 was $2.25, down 15 percent from $2.64 for August 2020. During the first eight months of 2021, the average price per broom was also $2.25, down 6 percent from $2.39 for the first eight months of 2020.

Brooms & Brushes Of Vegetable Material

The import total of brooms and brushes of vegetable material during August 2021 was 261,235, up 13 percent from 230,919 brooms and brushes imported during August 2020. For the first eight months of 2021, 1.7 million brooms and brushes were imported, up 13 percent from 1.5 million for the first eight months of 2020.

During the first eight months of 2021, Sri Lanka exported 960,828 brooms and brushes to the United States.

The average price per unit for August 2021 was 59 cents, down 39 percent from 97 cents for August 2020. During the first eight months of 2021, the average price per unit was $1.03, up 5 percent from 98 cents for the first eight months of 2020.


Toothbrushes

The United States imported 87.3 million toothbrushes in August 2021, up 14 percent from 76.4 million imported in August 2020. During the first eight months of 2021, 629.8 million toothbrushes were imported, down 5 percent from 660.4 million for the first eight months of 2020.

China sent 472.1 million toothbrushes to the United States during the first eight months of 2021.

The average price per toothbrush for August 2021 was 27 cents, up 13 percent from 24 cents for August 2020. During the first eight months of 2021, the average price per toothbrush was also 27 cents, up 8 percent from 25 cents for the first eight months of 2020.

Hairbrushes

August 2021 imports of hairbrushes totaled 5.8 million, up 21 percent from 4.8 million for August 2020. During the first eight months of 2021, 39.3 million hairbrushes were imported, up 36 percent from 29 million for the first eight months of 2020.

China sent 33.5 million hairbrushes to the United States during the first eight months of 2021.

The average price per hairbrush was 21 cents during August 2021, down 13 percent from 24 cents for August 2020. During the first eight months of 2021, the average price per hairbrush was also 21 cents, down 16 percent from 25 cents for the first eight months of 2020.

Shaving Brushes

The United States imported 9.4 million shaving brushes in August 2021, up 292 percent from 2.4 million imported in August 2020. During the first eight months of 2021, 44 million shaving brushes were imported, down 12 percent from 49.9 million for the first eight months of 2020.

China sent 35.2 million shaving brushes to the United States during the first eight months of 2021.

The average price per shaving brush for August 2021 was 6 cents, down 71 percent from 21 cents for August 2020. During the first eight months of 2021, the average price per brush was 12 cents, up 33 percent from 9 cents for the first eight months of 2020.


Paint Rollers

The import total of paint rollers during August 2021 was 6.7 million, down 31 percent from 9.7 million for August 2020. During the first eight months of 2021, 62.8 million paint rollers were imported, up 15 percent from 54.7 million for the first eight months of 2020.

China sent 44.4 million paint rollers to the United States during the first eight months of 2021.

The average price per paint roller for August 2021 was 47 cents, up 15 percent from 41 cents for August 2020. During the first eight months of 2021, the average price per paint roller was 45 cents, the same as for the first eight months of 2020.

Paintbrushes

U.S. companies imported 28.9 million paintbrushes during August 2021, down 25 percent from 38.8 million for August 2020. During the first eight months of 2021, 234.9 million paintbrushes were imported, up 22 percent from 193.3 million for the first eight months of 2020.

China shipped 216.5 million paintbrushes to the United States during the first eight months of 2021.

The average price per paintbrush for August 2021 was 31 cents, down 16 percent from 37 cents for August 2020. During the first eight months of 2021, the average price per paintbrush was 32 cents, down 6 percent from 34 cents for the first eight months of 2020.

Upright Brooms

The total import of upright brooms for August 2021 was 1.7 million, down 15 percent from 2 million for August 2020. During the first eight months of 2021, 14 million upright brooms were imported, up 9 percent from 12.8 million for the first eight months of 2020.

China sent 11.8 million upright brooms to the United States during the first eight months of 2021.

The average price per broom for August 2021 was $1.63, up 14 percent from $1.43 for August 2020. During the first eight months of 2021, the average price per broom was $1.44, up 8 percent from $1.33 for the first eight months of 2020.



– EXPORTS –

Export totals for August 2021 were down in three categories outlined: brooms and brushes of vegetable materials, shaving brushes and artist brushes, compared to August 2020. For the first eight months of 2021, export totals were up in two categories outlined: brooms and brushes of vegetable materials and paintbrushes, compared to the first eight months of 2020.


Brooms & Brushes Of Vegetable Materials

The United States exported 5,019 dozen brooms and brushes of vegetable materials during August 2021, down 26 percent from 6,754 dozen for August 2020. For the first eight months of 2021, 63,735 dozen brooms and brushes were exported, up 50 percent from 42,589 dozen for the first eight months of 2020.

The United States sent 35,242 dozen brooms and brushes to Canada during the first eight months of 2021.

The average price per dozen brooms and brushes was $31.18 in August 2021, up 33 percent from $23.39 for August 2020. During the first eight months of 2021, the average price per dozen brooms and brushes was $32.69, down 13 percent from $37.71 per dozen for the first eight months of 2020.

Toothbrushes

During August 2021, the United States exported 7.8 million toothbrushes, the same as for August 2020. During the first eight months of 2021, 63.6 million toothbrushes were exported, down 12 percent from 72.6 million for the first eight months of 2020.

The United States exported 15.1 million toothbrushes to Canada during the first eight months of 2021.

The average price per toothbrush for August 2021 was $1.22, up 20 percent from $1.02 for August 2020. During the first eight months of 2021, the average price per brush was 87 cents, up 7 percent from 81 cents for the first eight months of 2020.

Shaving Brushes

The United States exported 1 million shaving brushes during August 2021, down 41 percent from 1.7 million for August 2020. During the first eight months of 2021, 11.4 million shaving brushes were exported, the same as for the first eight months of 2020.

During the first eight months of 2021, the United States exported 5.7 million shaving brushes to Mexico and 1.9 million to Canada.

The average price per shaving brush for August 2021 was $1.23, up 5 percent from 82 cents for August 2020. During the first eight months of 2021, the average price per shaving brush was 94 cents, up 8 percent from 87 cents for the first eight months of 2020.

Artist Brushes

August 2021 exports of artist brushes totaled 417,753, down 35 percent from 642,326 for August 2020. During the first eight months of 2021, 3.5 million artist brushes were exported, down 30 percent from 5 million for the first eight months of 2020.

Canada received 2.9 million artist brushes from the United States during the first eight months of 2021.

The average price per artist brush was $5.11 during August 2021, up 66 percent from $3.07 for August 2020. During the first eight months of 2021, the average price per artist brush was $3.86, up 26 percent from $3.06 for the first eight months of 2020.

Paintbrushes

The export total of paintbrushes during August 2021 was 287,553, up 173 percent from 105,250 for August 2020. During the first eight months of 2021, 1.8 million paintbrushes were exported, up 64 percent from 1.1 million for the first eight months of 2020.

Canada imported 1 million paintbrushes from the United States during the first eight months of 2021.

The average price per paintbrush for August 2021 was $3.70, down 56 percent from $8.49 for August 2020. During the first eight months of 2021, the average price per paintbrush was $6.58, down 17 percent from $7.96 for the first eight months of 2020.

Cleaning industry professionals from around the world will attend The ISSA Show North America 2021, scheduled for November 15-18, at the all-new West Building of the Las Vegas Convention Center, in Las Vegas, NV.

Three trade show days, educational and networking opportunities, panel discussions and guest speakers will highlight the annual event. Manufacturers, distributors, facility managers, building service contractors and residential cleaners will come together at this year’s ISSA Show North America for information sharing, relationship building and product innovation. Attendees can expect to discover new solutions for improving efficiencies, skills and profitability, according to ISSA.


HEALTH AND SAFETY PROTOCOLS IN PLACE


“With a commitment to the health and well being of all ISSA Show North America 2021 participants, robust protocols are being put into place to ensure a safe and responsible event,” according to ISSA. They include:

COVID-19 Tests And Vaccinations: Everyone participating in this year’s ISSA Show must provide proof of either a negative COVID-19 test obtained within 72 hours of arriving at the event, or proof of full vaccination obtained no later than 14 days prior to arriving at the event. Find COVID-19 testing sites via Nevada Health Response at: nvhealthresponse.nv.gov;

Face Masks: ISSA Show North America will follow the state of Nevada’s mask policies at the time of the event. The state currently requires masks at all indoor events; and,

■ Cleaning, Disinfection, And Infection Prevention: “This year’s ISSA Show North America is being held at one of the first facilities in the world to receive GBAC STAR™ Facility Accreditation from the Global Biorisk Advisory Council™ (GBAC), a Division of ISSA. The convention center has fulfilled GBAC STAR’s 20 elements for cleaning, disinfection and infection prevention. Additionally, the cleaning contractor for this year’s event, United Services Companies, is a GBAC STAR Accredited Service Provider,” according to ISSA.

This year’s trade show exhibition floor, at the Las Vegas Convention Center,
will be open during the following times/days:
■ 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, November 16;
■ 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, November 17; and,
■ 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, November 18.


The ISSA Show North America 2021 officially opens on Monday, November 15, with a full day of educational sessions at the convention center, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Educational sessions will continue through Thursday, November 18.
